Varun Chakravarthy added to India's ODI squad for series against England

Does this mean a spot in the ICC Champions trophy squad?

Varun Chakravarthy added to India's ODI squad for series against England

Varun Chakravarthy, India's spinner, has been added to the ODI team for the three-match series against England following his great performance in the five T20Is.

Varun traveled with the group to Nagpur, the location of the first ODI, and trained on Tuesday before the series opening on Thursday. He was the leading wicket-taker in India's 4-1 triumph in the T20I series, which concluded on Sunday, taking 14 wickets at an average of 9.86 and an economy of 7.66.Varun has never played an ODI and is making his debut in the squad. He has only played 23 List A games but was the second top wicket-taker in this season's Vijay Hazare Trophy, with 18 wickets in six matches for Tamil Nadu. His inclusion in the ODI team strengthens the spin assault, which also includes Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar.

Karunaratne to retire from Test cricket after making his 100th appearance

Dimuth Karunaratne is set to retire from Test cricket after playing his 100th game this week, against Australia in Galle.

Three factors have played into the decision. With Sri Lanka set to play only two further Tests until May 2026, there is barely any cricket for a long-format specialist such as Karunaratne to focus on. Karunaratne, 36, has also struggled for runs over the past 14 months, averaging 27.05 since the start of 2024. This is also Sri Lanka's final Test of this World Test Championship cycle."It was the right time to go, considering there are three or four younger players who could come in for the next WTC cycle," Karunaratne told ESPNcricinfo. "Plus, this match was in Galle, where I made my debut, so it will be nice to finish things there."After the first Test against Australia ended, I told SLC that the next Test would be my last."

"I told him, just enjoy yourself because you only get 10,000 runs once in your life and some people don't get it at all."

BCCI silently removes Jasprit Bumrah from India's ODI squad against England as suspense around India pacer builds

Jasprit Bumrah will not play in India's next three-match ODI series against England, as the BCCI secretly pulled him from the 16-member roster. When the Indian speedster suffered back spasms during the Sydney Test against Australia, speculation over his fitness grew over time. However, the fact that he was picked to India's squad for the three ODIs and Champions Trophy that followed fuelled hopes for a quick comeback. When the squad was released, chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated that the management expected him to be ready for the third and final ODI against England. However, on Tuesday evening, the BCCI issued a formal announcement telling of Varun Chakravarthy's selection to the squad, but made no mention of Bumrah.

Mahmudullah, an allrounder born on this day, starred in Bangladesh's maiden overseas triumph, taking eight wickets against the West Indies (albeit a strike-affected B side) in Kingstown in 2009. He was elected vice-captain two years later and played an important part in the middle order, including winning the ODI series against the West Indies the following year. But it wasn't until the end of 2014 that he really made an impact, averaging 77.71 with the bat in ODIs over five months, culminating in a successful World Cup, where his two centuries - a match-winning one against England and a nearly victorious one against New Zealand - propelled Bangladesh to the tournament's knockout stages for the first time. He also scored four fifties in four consecutive Tests around that time.
