No more slow over-rate suspensions from this year's IPL

From IPL 2025 onwards, captains will no longer face a one-match suspension after three over-rate offenses in a season

From IPL 2025 onwards, captains will no longer face a one-match suspension after three over-rate offenses in a season. Instead, they will only be fined and subject to in-game field restrictions. However, penalties given before this change will still apply, meaning Hardik Pandya will miss the Mumbai Indians' opening game against the Chennai Super Kings on March 23.

The IPL governing council has also introduced a demerit points system, aligning with the ICC code of conduct. Any sanction by the match referee will result in demerit points—for instance, a 25% match fee fine will add one demerit point. These points will apply to both players and team officials and remain on record for 36 months. Accumulating enough demerit points could lead to a suspension.

Players, team officials, or franchises can appeal Level 2 or 3 offensesbefore the BCCI ombudsman, but only after paying an INR 90 lakh (USD 104,000 approx.) appeal fee, which will be refunded only if the appeal is fully successful. However, sanctions imposed before the 2025 season will not be converted into demerit points.

BCCI has announced a monetary award of Rs 58 crore for India's Champions Trophy 2025 winning team.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a massive cash reward of INR 58 crore for the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team after their victory at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

“Under the leadership of Captain Rohit Sharma, India dominated the tournament with four commanding wins on their way to the final. They started with a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh, followed by another six-wicket win against Pakistan. A 44-run triumph over New Zealand secured their semi-final spot, where they defeated Australia by four wickets,” the BCCI stated.

In the final on March 9 in Dubai, India edged past New Zealand by four wickets, with Rohit Sharma anchoring the chase with a crucial 76. The team also received nearly Rs 20 crore ($2.24 million) in official prize money for winning the title, while runners-up New Zealand earned $1.12 million (Rs. 9.72 crore).

This announcement follows a similar gesture from the BCCI after India’s T20 World Cup win in Barbados last year when the board rewarded the squad with Rs 125 crore—almost three times the prize money given to the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning team under MS Dhoni.

On This Day

In a thrilling World Cup semi-final in windy Auckland, Pakistan knocked out co-hosts New Zealand in dramatic fashion.

New Zealand posted 262 for 7, with Martin Crowe leading the charge with a blistering 91 off 83 balls before being run out. Pakistan’s chase started cautiously, but Inzamam-ul-Haq turned the game around with a blistering 60 off 37 balls, smashing powerful strokes into the open spaces. One towering straight hit seemed to hang in the wind forever before clearing the ropes for six.

Inzamam shared a crucial 87-run stand in ten overs with Javed Miandad before being run out by Chris Harris. With nine needed off eight balls, Moin Khan took charge, hammering Harris for a massive six, sending shockwaves around the ground, before sealing the win with a boundary behind square.
